ACOLYTES

Cult Aussie filmmaker Jon Hewitt spins this dark yarn about three teenagers who stumble upon a serial killer (Joel Edgerton, in a sublimely creepy performance) going about his dark and dodgy business and blackmail him to sort out a guy who’s been bullying them.

Wouldn’t we all like a serial killer at our beck and call? Shot locally in Queensland and making good use of the Glasshouse Mountains (you’ll never believe they could look this creepy and monolithic), Acolytes is a tense little homegrown shocker that you really ought to check out.

Acolytes trailer released – Dread Central

DREAD CENTRAL

http://www.dreadcentral.com/story/acolytes-bully-a-trailer

Acolytes

School bullies, who doesn’t remember them? Some people would get beaten up, their lunch money stolen or intimidated into doing the bully’s homework. They got off easy. The bullies in my home town pulled guns, cut ya or pushed you down stairs. If only the weaker kids had some kind of help to take care of the bastards…

Speaking of which, Twitch landed the first trailer for Jon Hewitt’s Australian horror film Acolytes. The Darklovestory director’s latest picture deals with three teenagers who enlist the aid of a serial killer (via blackmail, of course, probably due to shortage of funds) to take out a school bully. Oh, this won’t backfire on the kids at all!

Brand New Trailer For Aussie Horror ACOLYTES! – twitch

TWITCH

http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1214128517/bctid1659795390

Fresh off the news that it will be part of the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival we have just been given the very first look at the official trailer for Jon Hewitt’s Australian horror picture Acolytes. This trailer is actually a little bit shorter than the MySpace teaser we posted up yesterday but it’s a tighter, more focused look into this violent world. The story? Three teens blackmail a killer into taking down the violent bully who has been making their life hell, a nasty little turn on normal teen-horror conventions.

Festival’s Midnight Madness to feature film – Variety

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117989377.html?categoryId=36&cs=1

By JENNIE PUNTER

No longer a latenight ghetto, Midnight Madness has grown in the past few years to become the hot spot for the biz and one of the most prominent platforms to launch an adrenaline pic.

Jon Hewitt’s teen crime caper “Acolytes” gets its North American preem, as does Franck Vestiel’s manga and vidgame-inspired thriller “Eden Log,” Pascal Laugier’s vengeance saga “Martyrs” and “Chocolate,” from Thai helmer Prachya Pinkaew, whose “Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior” was a fest breakout in 2003.

The 33rd Toronto Film Festival runs Sept. 4-13.
